From Opletalova to Na příkopě: an Art Nouveau Loop in Prague 1

This circular city walk covers 3.9 km, about 47 minutes, starting at Opletalova in Prague’s New Town by Praha hlavní nádraží. The route has a compact urban character, linking station architecture, passages, shopping streets, old squares and quieter central lanes. It is especially rewarding for the Woodrow Wilson Monument, Jubilee Synagogue, Mucha Museum, Na příkopě, Ovocný trh, Celetná and Jilská.

Starting at Opletalova in Prague’s New Town, close to Praha hlavní nádraží, this 3.9 km circular walk is a compact introduction to the layered centre of Prague 1. It begins with a strong sense of arrival: the Woodrow Wilson Monument stands by the city’s main railway station, whose historic Fanta building is one of Prague’s notable Art Nouveau landmarks. If you want to pause before or after the walk, Fantova Kavárna inside the station is a particularly fitting stop, offering coffee in the restored station setting rather than just a practical railway break. From the station side, the route moves into the dense street pattern of Nové Město. Near the early part of the walk, the Jubilee Synagogue on Jerusalem Street adds one of the most colourful architectural moments, combining Moorish Revival and Art Nouveau detail. The walk then continues past CERGE-EI and onto Panská, where the Mucha Museum in Kaunický Palace gives the route a clear artistic theme: Alphonse Mucha’s Prague is never far away here. The circuit becomes livelier around pasáž Divadla Broadway and Na příkopě, the central street linking Wenceslas Square with Republic Square. Nearby, the Mucha Foundation Art Museum at Savarin Palace adds another Mucha-related landmark on this elegant commercial axis. Ovocný trh offers a good place to slow down: this small Old Town square was historically associated with fruit and vegetable trading and is now part of the pedestrian zone. From there, Celetná brings a more historic Old Town atmosphere, before the route bends through Jilská and toward Ostrovní. On or near this side of the loop, Café Louvre on Národní 22 is a classic grand-café option for a longer rest. The result is a pleasant, culture-rich city walk: short enough for a morning or late afternoon, but packed with station history, Art Nouveau, Jewish Prague, literary memory and central Prague street life.
